Avon House, Salisbury, has an Ofsted rating of “Good” with two “Outstanding” features.
Avon House is a home for children and young people aged 8 to 17 years old with emotional and behavioural needs that require medium to long term specialist care as a result of traumatic and potentially damaging experiences. We aim to provide a safe, homely environment which is filled with love, laughter and nurture combined with consistent routines enabling our young people to grow and develop and to be supported to achieve their full potential.
We provide well planned and managed placements based on therapeutic principles using our combined child care experience and clinical support. Avon House is an active member of the Community of Communities led through the Royal College of Psychiatrists participating in annual peer reviews.
We extend this participation to our approach to working in partnership with other agencies and in the ways we demonstrate our positive regard and communication with the children. The Avon team believes that high levels of consultation with social workers, parents and other professionals, including the local Police, are a priority to ensure that the needs of the children are met in a timely and proactive way.
Consultation with our young people helps them to feel listened to and valued. When combined with praising all accomplishments and positive behaviours we create a powerful basis to support trauma-based work.
“The young person is respected as an individual and offered warmth and affection” – social worker.
“Staff are firmly committed to outreach work and show a very caring, dedicated response to former residents” – Ofsted December 2014.
Five Rivers’ own school, the Farringdon Centre, forms part of an integrated approach to maximising the potential of all of our children. Although we aim to ensure the children can achieve mainstream education where possible, many of them, at least initially, require the consistency and additional support provided by this specialist team.
Every child at Avon benefits from evidence-led assessments that inform and shape our approaches and help to create bespoke care plans that help children to recover. All our clinical and therapeutic supports are led by our head clinician whose specialist field for over 24 years has been the assessment and psychotherapy of children.
The children at Avon enjoy living here and we do all we can to make it a positive experience. The house is homely yet exceptionally well maintained throughout and equipped to a high standard.
“The home feels cosy and family orientated” – parent of a young person at Avon.
The positioning of Avon House means there are numerous amenities close by including: swimming, bowling, soft play areas, parks. The New Forest, the Jurassic coast and Southampton are a short drive away.
“Young people have positive experiences (…) and are making good progress in all areas”- Ofsted, December 2014
