Staff Management Training
We will be devising a new programme for managers and those with management potential. This will be rolled out as a compulsory aspect of learning and professional development for all managers in all service sectors by the end of 2012. Departmental Training and New courses covering subjects such as Referrals and aspects of commercial management will be devised to compliment the development of our services and these will be advertised in the near future. The division of these courses will be in conjunction with other departments such as Commercial, Finance and Marketing.
Induction
Five Rivers Childcare recognises the importance of an effective induction process. We aim to provide a Five Rivers standard induction by summer of this year. This will be a full and insightful introduction for all employees who join the organisation and will be delivered quarterly at our Headquarters. This induction will involve Heads of and members of all departments across the company and will enable all new employees to have an understanding of all our services and the people and processes involved. The Learning and Development Department will keep you all updated with regards to our progress on this.
It is important that all workers supporting children, young people, parents and families, in care settings or family homes are provided with appropriate and timely training and development so that children are safe and achieve the best possible outcome.
We need to ensure that our workforce is skilled, well-led and supported by effective, shared and standardized systems and processes in order that the children and young people in our care achieve and exceed the Every Child Matters outcomes. People in different parts of the workforce need to be able to work well together across institutional and professional boundaries, focused around the needs of the child and young person. Five Rivers is committed to developing organisational learning and at the heart of this is induction, which provides a solid building block from which to develop a skilled workforce. Our Common Induction training helps the workforce to do this, as it includes the seven competencies of the Common Core of Skills and Knowledge:
- Understanding the principles and values essential for working with children and young people.
- Understand your role as a worker (employed, self-employed, voluntary)
- Understand health and safety requirements protecting them as far as possible from danger and harm.
- Know how to communicate effectively.
- Understand the development of children and young people.
- Safeguard children and keep them safe from harm.
- Develop yourself.
All employees new to Five Rivers Residential Childcare will complete a induction as part of their probationary period and the six month probationary review cannot be held until the Human Resources Department has received a completed 'sign off' sheet from the Home Manager. Everyone receives an induction booklet following a day of training and introduction, each employee is then allocated a mentor (very often practice supervisor) who will provide support throughout the six month period.
All new employees will discuss their progress within their fortnightly supervision and will need to provide evidence of their work and learning. Health and Safety We are pleased to announce that we now have a Health and Safety consultant who is developing our training in this field for carers and staff of all levels.
Our programme of training commences this spring and will be delivered in all regions of Five Rivers. Probably one of the most pragmatic people in his field, Our department has a "keep it simple" approach and plans to help Five Rivers maintain its high standards whilst making Health and Safety law easy to comply with and less daunting. We will be running several training courses which will include the IOSH accredited 'Managing Safely' four day course together with shorter courses covering the Understanding of Risk and Risk Control as well a course designed to help you understand your legal obligations and responsibilities.
The health and safety policy is a living document which should grow and evolve with the organisation.
