Residential Care Case Study: Emma
Self-Esteem & Social Skills Recovered & Developed
Emma was 11 when she was first referred to Five Rivers. She was removed from her parents at the age of 9 under a full care order due to their neglect. Her first foster care placement had broken down and the second was heading that way due to Emma’s inability to interact with the Foster Carer’s own children and the inappropriate and attention seeking behaviours she displayed.
Whilst she maintained supervised visits to her Grandfather, his age prevented him from being considered as a Foster Carer.
Her placement authority therefore wanted a planned entry into a Residential Children’s Home specifically a group-living environment.
First Visit Opens the Door:
Emma visited a Five Rivers Group Living Residential Home and was soon admitted and into our residential programme with defined boundaries and goals.
Emma initially struggled with her new environment displaying inappropriate, attention seeking and manipulative behaviour towards other children and staff. Emma also attended a local secondary school where she struggled academically, was unable to make friends and falsely accused other students of bullying.
Emma was showing low-levels of self-esteem, lacked confidence and craved the attention that she felt others were given.
Praise, Support and Dedication Provide the Key:
Emma’s situation required a comprehensive programme to be effectively implemented. At school she was given additional one to one tutorials to help improve her confidence and understanding.
She was encouraged to join school clubs to make friends and praised whenever the opportunity arose.
Regular supervised visits to her committed Grandfather continued, whilst the staff helped enhance her self esteem and supported her in achieving the goal plans to obtain the opportunities that she sought.
Achieving Positive Outcomes:
Emma joined school IT and sports clubs together with the local hockey team and Sea Cadets. With her confidence and self esteem improved this ensured she made friends and settled within the community.
At 14 she started unsupervised weekly visits to her Grandfather, who took her shopping and out for meals. Now at 16 she has a part time job, is predicted B and C grades in 11 GCSE examinations, intends to study A levels and progress onwards to University. She has been taught a range of life skills and been given greater independence including cooking her own meals and doing her own laundry.
Successful Pathway Programme:
Working closely with Emma’s placement authority and with the positive outcomes now achieved, Emma is moving from a Residential Children’s Home into a family Foster Care placement. She has already met her Foster Carers and their children and feels comfortable with her new environment and her ability to develop appropriate attachments.
